Ghost of White Rock Lake by photoenhance Ghost of White Rock Lake by photoenhance
One of the best-known Dallas legends is the so-called "Lady of White Rock Lake," a ghostly figure who is said to haunt the park's environs. Everyone it seems has heard one or more versions of the story (which seem to have become more gruesome and embellished over time) but is there any truth to them? Or is the "lady" nothing more than an urban legend that has its counterparts in other U.S. cities? No one seems to know for sure.

In 1953 a detailed account was included in Dallas author Frank X. Tolbert's book, Neiman-Marcus, Texas: The Story of the Proud Dallas Store:

One night about ten years ago a beautiful blonde girl ghost appeared on a road near Dallas' White Rock Lake.

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Malloy, directors for display for the world-famous specialty store, Neiman-Marcus, saw the girl. Only they didn't recognize her, right off, for a ghost. She had walked up from the beach. And she stood there in the headlights of the slow-moving Malloy car. Mrs. Malloy said, "Stop, Guy. That girl seems in trouble. She must have fallen in the lake. Her dress is wet. Yet you can tell that it is a very fine dress. She certainly got it at the Store."

By "the Store," Mrs. Malloy meant the Neiman-Marcus Company of Dallas.

The girl spoke in a friendly, cultured contralto to the couple after the car had stopped. She said she'd like to be taken to an address on Gaston Avenue in the nearby Lakewood section. It was an emergency she said. She didn't explain what had happened to her, and the Malloys were too polite to ask. She had long hair, which was beginning to dry in the night breeze. And Mrs. Malloy was now sure that this girl was wearing a Neiman-Marcus dress. She was very gracious as she slipped by Mrs. Malloy and got in the back seat of the two-door sedan.

When the car started, Mrs. Malloy turned to converse with the passenger in the Neiman-Marcus gown. The girl had vanished. There was a damp spot on the back seat.

The Malloys went to the address on Gaston Avenue. A middle-aged man answered the door. Yes, he had a daughter with long blonde hair who wore nothing but Neiman-Marcus clothes. She had been drowned about two years before when she fell off a pier at White Rock Lake.

The point of this story - for our purposes - is not that Mr. and Mrs. Guy Malloy, a hard-working, sober, no-nonsense couple, say very firmly that they saw a ghost. Other folks say they have seen the beautiful girl ghost of White Rock. The point of this story is that she was a very well-dressed ghost. And Mrs. Malloy at once identified her as wearing Neiman-Marcus clothes.

Well overall, this is a pretty Lovely manip. Everything flows together quite fluidly and well. I really like the transparencies on the girl, and I also really like the fact she doesn't seem to have feet or anything like her dress is the end, which is cool as seeing she's a ghost.

The feel of this piece is nice, and I like how dark everything is. Good job here :aww:

I agree with charminou, perhaps her skin would have looked better when it hadn't been so transparent. But otherwise I like this picture. :) :+fav:

I absolutely love a good ghost story.

The manip itself is exquisite.
Although some said the birds were too dark compared to the rest of the image, I think they make the rest look more ghostly and surreal.

Thoughtfully providing the story made for a downright satisfying experience.

Awesome work, and thanks for all the effort you put into it.

This one looks pretty neat, but however the moon doesn't look as bright as I'd desire to.

Hint --> I'd suggest you to make a copy of the moon/stars/halo layers, blur them around 8.0 and afterwards turn their lighting mode (all of the over the originals) into "Dodge" mode.

I think you may like the try ;).

you're right about the moon, i think i didn't brighten it more because i couldn't get it bright enough without making it look...weird. i don't really know how to explain it, it just looked out of place. but i'll definitely have to try your suggestion. thanks so much :)

The girl with the pier underneath her is beautiful, the outline of the birds is a bit sharp for a moonlit night. Might work a bit better if they were not such a stark black, they actually draw attention away from the main subject for me.

BTW haveing peeked thru your gallery, each piece shows definate improvment, keep it up!

i definitely agree about the birds, and i think so does everyone else! i was just so focused on everything else it just slipped my mind! i will have to go back in and touch it up :)

and thank you, when i see the first one i posted i want to take it down! but i'm trying to keep all of them up so i can see how i progress, i like to think i'm improving~especially since i've only been doing this for about a month!~so thank you for that :)

I think you created a nice 'moody and misty' picture. In the thumb I thought it was lacking contrast and grey all over, but now that I fullviewed it I must humbly take that back. The overal smoothness of the picture is nice too.
Very nice, all in all. I'm not entirely sure about the birds, I read above you did a retouch on them, I'd keep them somewhat 'vaguer' or else they grab too much attention.
Oh, and I love your 'sign' very artistic. :D

well thank you very much :) no, i haven't touched up the birds yet. they were already there in the background that i used and i was so focused on everything else in the picture that i didn't even realize or think about them. but i will definitely go back and make them not so overpowering and obvious :)
thanks much :)
